Trance Macabre is grateful for the opportunity to release their first vinyl statement with Redscroll Records. Composer and bandleader Nicholas Serrambana plays fretless bass while joined by the ever urgent Wes Lewis on saxophone, the insightful Vigilance Brandon on brass, the uncanny Michael Larocca on drums, flute sorceress Autumn Asbridge, and Connecticut jazz pedagogue extraordinaire Noah Baerman on synth. This sextet reinvigorates the disenfranchised jazz fan through a punk theatricality and invites non-jazz listeners to enter the music without the dogma of genre. Though Trance Macabre presents compositions here, the presence of free improvisation is integral. Each of the four pieces here stretches out to prog rock lengths, but with both ample melodies and unscripted plateaus throughout. Those who are drawn in by the dissonant onset of the first song may find themselves surprised to discover the lyrical ballad that concludes side B. This record is for people who dare to recognize the singable in Cecil Taylor.
